EDITION 23

Message from Clare Seddon

As we wrap up another incredible year, I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all HIPPY staff and providers for your consistent and thoughtful support of families in your local communities. The dedication and effort you put into the program remains the cornerstone supporting HIPPY’s impact and is at the heart of our achievements.

It has been a busy year filled with activities and opportunities that have strengthened our program. For the network, it has included participation in the DSS evaluation, advancing Inclusion in Action work, involvement in the HIPPY International visit and Change Makers pilot and, most importantly, continuing to provide unwavering support and program delivery for families.

For the HIPPY Australia National Office, it’s been a particularly significant year with the DSS evaluation, a period of increased advocacy as we work to negotiate the next grant agreement with the Department of Social Services (DSS), and time of great change with the Transition to ACCO Project at First Nations focused sites.

DSS evaluation

The evaluation has provided us with a valuable opportunity to showcase the impact of HIPPY and identify ways to strengthen the program. We are awaiting the final results and will share them with you as soon as they are available. Your collective effort continues to demonstrate that HIPPY remains responsive, impactful, and aligned with the needs of families and communities.

Transition to ACCO Project

I want to acknowledge all of the work that has gone into the Transition to ACCO Project this year. The project has been a focus for a significant part of the HIPPY network and our own national office team.

As part of our commitment to Closing the Gap and improving outcomes for, and engagement with, First Nations families, we have been listening to communities-privileging community voice-to understand whether HIPPY continues to provide value in their communities and whether Aboriginal community controlled organisations (ACCOs), or ACCO-led partnerships are best placed to run the program at First Nations focused sites.

I appreciate that this important project has also brought changes to the HIPPY network. 15 ACCO providers will join HIPPY in the new year, while six sites will retain their current providers through caretaker relationships or partnerships and will continue to strengthen their partnerships with ACCOs & cultural governance. We will provide more information about these providers in the new year.

At the end of this year, we are farewelling the following providers:

I would like to thank all the staff and providers who will be finishing up with HIPPY this year. We recognise the achievements and impact you've made while delivering HIPPY with dedication. You built strong and successful programs and, most importantly, meaningful relationships in your communities, supporting hundreds of children and families through transformative learning journeys.

We know that change is not easy, and we deeply appreciate the professionalism and care you have shown throughout this transition process. Your commitment to stronger outcomes for First Nations families has been evident at every step. The solid legacy of your work will continue in these communities. Thank you.

Graduations

As always, the end of the year brings with it a season of HIPPY graduations. Seeing photos, hearing family stories, and even attending some ceremonies has been-and always is-inspirational. Seeing the joy on children’s faces and the pride in the eyes of their parents and carers is forever a powerful reminder of how the program continues to change lives.

A huge thanks to providers who invited MPs to these events and leveraged local media to highlight HIPPY’s success-your efforts truly make a difference. As we continue advocating with DSS for the next HIPPY contract, your dedication and increased visibility of the impact of HIPPY is deeply appreciated.

2026 looks to be a great year of opportunity, reflection, and innovation as we work on advocacy, program, and systems enhancements, and continue the journey to support self-determination. These efforts aim to provide the network with more support, clarity, and confidence as we look to the future.

In the meantime, I wish you all an amazing, hopefully restful, and safe holiday break, and look forward to continuing to work with you next year.
